Fun Spider Cookies for Halloween
I used my eggless Shrewsbury biscuit dough recipe for these spider cookies and this cookie cutter from amazon.in. It’s plastic and very easy to use. I added a few drops of Magic black gel colour to the white dough before rolling out. You could also use regular food colour but chances are that the dough would turn out more grey than black without the concentrated gel colour.
The Shrewsbury biscuits dough gets soft quickly -because the main ingredient is butter. So it can be a bit tricky to use cookie cutters with it. If you are making these cookies with kids, I recommend using a firmer dough. This butter cookie dough is firmer and will make it a pleasant experience for everyone. Otherwise keep putting the unused pieces back in the fridge to cool down and firm up.
Dangerous Spider Cookies to scare your guests?
We added silver sugar balls in a cross on the spider’s back as a finishing touch. I know this isn’t 100% correct, of course. The garden spider commonly found in Europe (which has a white cross on it’s back) isn’t usually black or dangerous. We went with the cross anyways, as we liked that finishing touch. Be sure to push the sugar balls firmly in, so they don’t fall out after baking.

You can also make these creepy severed finger biscuits with the same dough. If it’s just for a small party you can easily make both types of creepy Halloween cookies with one portion of dough. Both of the cookie doughs mentioned in this post stay fresh for up to 2 months in the freezer or a few days in the fridge. So you don’t have to bake everything on the same day. It’s all about making it easy for ourselves, right? 😉

Roll out the black dough on the kitchen counter dusted with flour
Punch out the spider using the spider cookie cutter. Use a sharp knife or a spatula to lift the spider from the counter.
Transfer the spider to a baking tray lined with baking paper. Add the sugar balls in a cross on the back of the spider. As you can see from the main picture, we also tried to add eyes but we quickly realized that it didn't look very good so we removed those sugar balls again.
Bake in the oven at 180 degrees Celsius for 10-12 minutes. Make sure the cookies cool down completely before storing them in an airtight container for up to 10 days.
